Mobility Aid And Appliances Research And Development Center, Lagos, Nigeria, West Africa

Mobility Aid and Appliances Research and Development Centre [MAARDEC] was founded in 1991, and was officially commissioned by the then President of Nigeria, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida in 1992.

MAARDEC is a child of necessity conceived by the ingenuity of its founder, Cosmas Ikechukwu Blaise Okoli, a Nigerian with disability who has the zeal for empowering people with disabilities so that they can enjoy normal dignified lives.

The organization is registered by guarantee [RC 245710] and was established primarily to research, develop and produce mobility aids and appliances for sales to persons with disability at subsidized rates and outright donations in some cases; these decisions were born out of the realization that Nigerians with disabilities constitute the poorest of the poor in our society most of whom cannot afford the most rudimentary aids and appliances to leave home to find means of livelihood.
